Arkhangai aimag situates in the central part of the Khangai mountain range and its territories consist of mountain, wooded steppe and plain. The average altitude of the aimag is 2414 meters above sea level. The highest point is Kharalagtai peak clad in eternal snow at 3539 meters above sea level, while the lowest point is the area of the confluence of the Orkhon and the Tamir rivers at 1290 meters above sea level. There is mainly scattered grey and black soil of mountain meadow and forest. Over 70 per cent of the territory of the aimag is pasture land, almost 2 per cent with hay-fields, about 1 per cent with sown area, and 15 per cent of the territory is covered with broadleaved and coniferous forest. There are ibexes, wild sheep, snow leopard, lynx, musk stag, boar in a mountain, and marmot, suslik, fox, corsas in a steppe. There are several peaks in the eternal snow at the four seasons of the year such as Suvraga, Noyon, Khan-Undur, and rapid rivers of Khanui, Khunui, Orkhon, Chuluut, South and North Tamir gushed from high mountain range of the Khangai and the fresh water lakes are Ugii, and Terkh. These rivers and lakes teem with taimen, grayling, scale, perth. There are many springs such as Khadat, Mukhar Khujirt, Bora tal, Tsagaan sum, Belkh, and many beautiful places like Khorgo and Taikhar Chuluu. There are about 1700 species of flora and 20 per cent is medical herbs. There are rare species such as roseroof, pheasant eye, sausserea involucrata. Arkhangai aimag is rich in historic places. There are many findings of Old Stone Age at the basin of Orkhon, Tamir, Chuluut rivers, and inscriptions of the Bilge Khan and Kul-Tegena at Tsaidam monuments in the Taikhar Chuluu and the Khashaat somon, and ruins of the ancient capital city of the Uighur Khanate in Khotont somon. Agricultural sector mainly dominates the economic activities of the aimag. There are about 29.000 acres of arable land, used for growing cereal, potato, and other kinds of vegetables. Local farmers harvest about 20.000 tons of grain annually. In 2005, the total number of livestock reached 1.948 thousand heads.
