Bayan-Ulgii aimag situates in the far Western frontier. Borders of the aimag are on the Western North side with the Russian Federation and on the Western-South side with the People¡¯s Republic of China. The Nairamdal peak/4374m/ of the Altai Tavan Bogd is the highest, Khovd is the biggest river /516 km in length/ of the country. There are many fresh water lakes in which shoals of fish swim and birds sing. The Tolbo and Dayan lakes are the largest. This aimag has Ak-su, Chigertei and other springs. Every part of the area of Bayan-Ulgii aimag is suitable for the pasture. There are flora of kobresia, sedge in the mountain plateau, and goosberry and ribes altissimum are in the scree, and there are wild cherry seabucks in the of streams and rivers. The 10 per cent of the area is a forest, mainly larches. Geological surveyers determined that this territory contains whole-some fossil, ferro and non-ferrous metals, oil and building material resourses. There are wild sheep, ibexes, and snow leopards in the Altai high mountain range and the marmots, and foxes inhabit at the lower slopes of mountains. There are bears, lynxes, squirrels in the forests. 80 per cent of the population is Kazakh and 17 per cent is Uriankhai. In 2005, the total number of livestock reached 1,346 thousand heads. This year Bayan-Ulgii harvested over 3.000 tons of grain, 600 tons of forage, 20.365 tons of potatoes and vegetables. The coal mine of Bayan-Ulgii aimag has produced 400.000 tons of coal and has a trade turnover of 166.700 mln tugrigs.
