The Dornod aimag borders on the North with the Russian Federation and on the East and South-East with the People's Republic of China. The Khalkh population dominate, but Buriad and Barga inhabit Ereentsav of Bayan Uul, Bayandun, Dashbalbar, Tsagaan-Ovoo somons. Uzemchid inhabit Gurvanzagal, Khuluunbuir somons. The 4/5 of the territory is hillous and plain steppe. The vast steppes such as Menen, Matad, Tamsag are almost 300 km in the East of the territory and some area is 150 km wide. There are 150-200 km wide steppes along both sides of Kherulen river. The lowest point of our country is the basin of Khukh lake/560m/ on the North-Eastern part of the Dornod aimag. There are the branches of Khyangan mountain range at 1000-1600 m above sea level on the east-southern part of the territory. There are high mountains along the sides of the Uulz river, and low hills with the groves of trees along the sides of the Onon river. The annual precipitation is 250-300 mm. The Onon, Kherulen, Khalkh, Uulz are biggest rivers in this area. There are a few lakes of big and middle sizes such as Khukh, Galuut, Bayan, Bulan and Buir. The Buir lake is the biggest, and others are salt lakes without streams. There are many springs, such as Tsagaan Khundii, Utaat Minjuur, Ereen, Tsagaan chuluut. Deer, elk, raccon, boar, otter, white antilope live in the basins of Onon and Uulz rivers, and in the branches of the Khyangan mountains range. Marmots are on the steppe. The bears, boars, muskrates inhabit on the basin of the Onon river. Wolf, fox, corsa can been seen everywhere, and squirrel and lynx may be seen somewhere. The soil of the territory is black and brown and rich in the pasture grass. The basin of the rivers is fertile. The antilopes dominate on the pastures. Dornod aimag has a relatively well developed infrastructure. 81.3 per cent of total arable land or around 10.0 mln hectares are either cultivated or used as pasture. 30 thousand hectares are under cultivation for wheat growing and around 400 hectares for growing vegetables. Total livestock is 887 thousand heads. Mining, light industries, food processing and construction represent local industry.
