Gobi-Altai aimag locates on the western part of the country. It borders on the South-West with the People¡¯s Republic of China. The Sutai, Azh bogda, Tayan, Edren, Burkhan buudai majestic peaks of the Mongol Altai mountains extends from North to South over the territory of the aimag. The highest peak among them is Sutai peak clad in eternal snow at 4226 meters above sea level. There are wide semi-deserts such as Sharga, Dukhum, Zakhuu, Zarman, Biger, Alagnuur, Tsengkher, Nomin between these mountains. Almost all species and soil have a steppe features: Zakhui, Zarman, Nomin semi-deserts have beautiful oasises with saksaul, ulmus, populus diversifolia, bulrush and reed. There are about twenty small and big salt lakes, such as Tonkhil, Ikhes, Alag, Shargiin Tsagaan, Biger without streams emptying into them. There are populus diversifolia, saksaul, tamarisk in some Gobi area and hippobopac, peplars, willows are along the humid areas, and larch, curgana pygmaya, sympegma and bramble grow in mountaineous parts. Wild animals are wild sheep, ibex, deer, mountains-funas, snow-leopard, lynx, corsa, wild cat, wolf, fox, ermin and marmot. Birds are eagle, falcon, condor, snow-cock, bearded vulture and diver. They live in the Altai mountains. There are wild-camel, wild-horse, saiga, tatarica Mongolica, black tailed antilope, gobi-bear, gobi-boar in the semi-desert. Main direction of the aimag's economy is agriculture and animal husbandry and it has 1.539 thousand heads. As for the goatstock this aimag takes 2nd place in the country. In the industrial sector, the aimag manufactures the total of 2407,2 million tugriks’ products.
