This aimag situates in the far western frontier of the our country, in the beautiful area, and it is the famous center of many nationalities. The Khovd aimag borders on the West, and South-West with the People's Republic of China. The highest point of the territory is the Munkhkhairkhan peak. Its altitude is 4204 m above sea level, and the lowest point is Altain Bor tsonj, its altitude is 1126 meters above sea level. 20% of the territory is semi-desert and steppe. This aimag is rich in historical, cultural and beautiful places, such as Khartgai, Tsagaan burgas, Turgen, Khan Serkh waterfall, Endert, Baatar, Buuliastai, Uyench, Bodonch, Botgon steep canyon, Sacred tree, Ulaankhairkhan peak, Nuramt, Tsakhir, Thengkheriin caves. There are natural resourses of ferrous and nonferrous metals, building materials and fuel, antracite, iron ore, copper, lead, marble, granite, ochre and etc. The annual average precipitation is 122 mm and 400-500 mm in high Altai mountains. There are Khovd, Bulgan, Buyant, Bodonch, Tsenkher rivers and Khar Us, Khar nuur, Durgun are the biggest lakes. The main parts of the territory is a black soil, the mountain part has meadow soil. Beyond Altai mountain has bright and saline soil. Plants are poplar, birch, clab rush, tamarisk and populus diversifolia. Fruits are currant, strawberry, ribes altissimum and hippobophae. They grow along the sides of Sutai, Baitag, Uliastai, Jargalant, Bulgan, Khovd, Buyant rivers. The wild sheep, ibexes, snow leopard live in the high mountains. The marmots are in the meadows. Bears, foxes, boars, ermines, lynxes, corsas, wild cats, rabbits live in the forests. The rare animals are wild horses, wild camels, saiga mongolica and wild ass. They live in the Gobi on the south of Altai mountain range. There are birds such as condors, eagles, bearded vultures, upband burrards hawks, snowcocks and kites. The livestock of the aimag is 1,788 thousand heads. The province takes 1st place with 986.3 thousand heads of goat.
