The Umnugobi aimag was established in 1931. The territory of aimag is semi-desert. The average altitude is about 1300-1600m. above sea level. There are Gurvan saikhan, Tost, Servei, Noyon Bogda, Nomgon, Nemegt, Altana and Gilbent. They are the contituation of the Altai mountain range and elevate up to 3000 m. above sea level. There is the famous Gobi desert such as Khongor sand, Galba, Borzon, Zeemeg, Zag, Suzh. Khongor sand is 92.5 square km, and its length is 185 km and 20 km wide in some area. The annual average temperature is about +3.9 C in the major area of the territory, while the average temperature in July is about +20 C-+25 C and in January about -15 C- -25 C. The annual average precipitation is about 133 mm. There are many cold springs, such as Khadaat, Nemegt, Zoloon, Enger buleen, Talkhit. The Elgen and Salkhit are hot springs. Over 250 species of flora grow in the territory of the Umnugobi aimag. There are medical herbs, such as astragalus, gentian, flavour nitracia, cynomorium, agriophyllium, and trees such as saksaul, oleaster, populus diversifolia and elm. The rarest animals are wild horses, wild sheep, ibexes, wild camels. This aimag is rich in black tailed antilopes, white antilopes, lynxes, foxes, corsas, rabbits and badgers. The territory of the aimag is rich in interesting places with specific geological formations, such as the mirror rock, the salt lake. They exist in the sand, the spring gushes of the hillock, the beautiful oasis with groves of elm, populus diversifolia, cleaster and vast valleys of sand dunes. There are many interesting places, such as Gurvan Zeerd, Dulaan buut huge caves, the famous national park Yoliin valley, so called "Khangai in the Gobi" and Dungeneegiin valley, Kherem hillock. The South is a stout bright soil, and North is a brown semi-desert soil. This aimag is rich in dinosaur remnants of 60-80 million years old, and plenty of findings of old stone age, and of stone age and bronze age. There are ruins of the ancient cities, fortification remnants, and ancient graves, monuments. The main section of economy is an animal husbandry. The total livestock reached 1,070 thousand heads. The region has the most camels- 70.8 thousand haeds. The aimag has the largest number of camels in Mongolia and takes the 5th place in goats. The annual production reaches 1800.0 mln tugriks, trade turnover is 2000.0 mln tugriks.
