The Zavkhan aimag situates on the western part of Mongolia. It borders on the North with the Russian Federation. The territory of this aimag is hillous, and 10 per cent of the territory is Khangai landscape and wooded steppe, and others ace steppe and semi-desert. The dominated peak of Khangai mountain is the Otgontenger, and its altitude is 3905 meters above sea level. The most cold period of the year is the January with average temperature of about -32 Degrees Celsius. The annual precipitation is about 200-300 mm. There are many rivers, such as Ider, Tes, Zavkhan, Khun gushed of the Khangai mountain range. There are several small and big lakes such as Otgon, Telmen, Khar, Kholboo. The longest river is Zavkhan and its length is 808 km. The largest lake is the Telmen of about 200 sq.km. Zavkhan aimag is rich in springs, such as Otgontenger, Ulaan Khaalga and Khojuul. Western part of the territory is of pale soil and the eastern part of the aimag is mountainous forest soil. Herbs such as saussurea involucrata, kobresia, sedge, shrub grow in this territory. The largest sand dune /Mongol sand/ and Bor Khar sand exist in the Zavkhan aimag. The forest teem with bear, deer, boar, musk deer, the mountains are rich in wild sheep, ibex, lynx, and antilope, and black tailed antilope are in the steppe. The birds are condor, eagle, suran, ottis targa, guose, pelicane, storke, gule. The main sector of economy is agriculture. Total livestock is 1.901 thousand heads. Aimags industry produces a range of products including construction materials, meat, wood, animal- by products and foodstuff.
